•The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to contribute to divisional strategic objectives through leading and managing a section of the zoo which consists of a specific group of animal taxa according to best husbandry and welfare practices.
To lead the development of functional plans and contribute to the development of strategy for the animal collection and conservation directorate.
To manage outputs such as the daily husbandry and welfare activities, section projects, animal capture operations, infrastructure projects, administration requirements and public needs.
To manage a team in respect of outputs, staff relations, performance management, mentoring and skills development.
To support governance, risk and compliance though budget management, asset and equipment management and health and safety requirements relating to the assigned section.
•The position requires a degree in Zoology, Nature Conservation, Game Ranch Management, Animal Health, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7.
•Honours or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage.
•The successful candidate must have 6 years’ experience in relevant field, 3 years of which should be at supervisory position(s).
•The successful candidate must have:
-Willingness and preparedness to work with dangerous animals
-Extensive experience in working with Reptiles and other Herps including Amphibians and Invertebrates
-In-depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation
-Knowledge about legislation pertaining to biodiversity conservation
-Knowledge about legislation and policies related to human resources, procurement, and financial management
-Must have a good understanding of the World Zoo and Aquaria Conservation and Animal Welfare Strategies
-Must have a good understanding of the South African National Standard for Zoo and Aquarium Practice
-Must have excellent project management skills
-Must have a good understanding of animal welfare and ethics
-Must have a clear understanding of Health and Safety in the work place
-A valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel.
