Job Summary

•To manage the programming department and drive the implementation of the station’s programming strategy to increase audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

•Develop Implement and Monitor Programming Strategies for the relevant radio station or group of stations, in line with the Radio •Business Strategy, goals and Licence conditions.
•Develop an implementation plan for a multi-platform, multipurpose content development and execution environment.
•Conduct continuous reviews of product offerings, target market trends and revenue generation opportunities in order to meet strategic objectives and ensure a competitive edge.
•Liaise with various Internal stakeholders (i.e. Sales and Marketing, Finance, Market •Intelligence, Internal Content Providers etc) to ensure radio programming strategic objectives and license conditions are met.
•Develop, implement and monitor programme briefs to ensure high quality end-product.
•Develop and implement a multi-pronged programme acquisition and distribution strategy.
•Develop a multi- platform media strategy in line with target audience needs.
•Manage and implement output of the Programming plan for the channel/s in line with set objectives and within allocated budget.
•Utilise continuous research, polls and public feedback sessions to ensure high quality programming to deliver on programming objectives.
•Monitor programmes to ensure quality and alignment with channel positioning.
•Develop plans for on-air talent management (identification, recruitment and coaching).
•Review business plans to ensure schedule stability.
•Explore opportunities for Co-productions and programme sales for cost containment and revenue growth.
•Monitor and report on the operational risk and compliance matters.
•Implement internal control measures to ensure good governance.
•Manage risks to protect organisational integrity, create value, prevent financial loss and ensure compliance with applicable policies and legislations.
•Engage constantly with Internal and External business partners to achieve business objectives.
•Understand the needs of the Channel’s target audience and offer compelling programming in line with Mandate.
•Respond timeously to complaints.
•Liaise with Commercial Enterprises and Business Development on sponsorships, trade exchanges and product placement of programmes to realize cost efficiencies.
•Liaise with internal content providers to ensure content alignment to programming strategy
•Effective implementation of Performance Management System in accordance with organizational policy and procedures.
•Ensure adequate staffing for workload, succession planning and effective leadership.
•Create talent banks for continuity purposes and to mitigate against risks.
•Effective briefing and communication with departmental staff.
•Personal Development Plans (PDP) for all staff members.
Provide direction on the retention and attraction of staff.
•Conduct Individual coaching, counselling and mentoring on an ongoing basis to meet performance needs.

Qualifications and Experience

•Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism/Media Studies or equivalent qualification (NQF level 7)
•6 years’ experience in radio broadcasting of which 3 years should be at supervisory level.
•Budget management and forward scenario planning

•Editorial acumen
•Strategic management
•Compliance to Internal policies
•Management information systems
•Understanding of the different role players within the media landscape
•Understanding of applicable legislative frameworks and regulations.
