Job Summary


•To provide editorial and operational leadership in the production and dissemination of news and current affairs programming that meets all primary objectives of the SABC’s public mandate, in accordance with SABC News’ core principles of editorial independence and impartiality, for all platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities


•Develop and implement programming in accordance with the programming and publishing philosophy of SABC News and Current Affairs.
•Develop a programming and publishing plan for the unit in accordance with the SABC’s public mandate and SABC News’ vision and strategy, and guide teams to achieve business unit and divisional objectives.
•Provide support and input in the development and implementation of SABC News and Current Affairs strategy.
•Plan, organise and manage all activities pertaining to the business unit.
•Oversee coordination of content and programmes for all platforms and ensure that editorial and operational requirements are met.
•Lead the conceptualisation, plannning and commissioning of discussions/debates on issues of public importance.
•Brief and debrief editors and producers on content requirements for different audiences.
•Provide input and guide diary sessions whenever necessary.
•Utilise unit resources effectively and efficiently to provide high quality programmes and bulletins.
•Provide support and compile reports on performance as well as challenges faced by different platforms.
•Fomulate and manage the utilisation of the unit’s budget cost effectively
•Introduce and implement appropriate measures to ensure financial discipline and accountability.
•Consult with Divisional Finance to determine budget requirements.
•Manage and authorise payments for all logistical services, travel arrangements, over time and independent contractors.
•Ensure adherence to South Africa’s Constitution, all broadcasting and publishing-related legislation, ICASA regulations, the BCCSA Code of Conduct, the Press Code and the SABC’s Editorial Policies.
•Manage the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.
•Identify, mitigate and manage news and current affairs risks across platforms.
•Monitor and report on OHS requirements.
•Ensure full adherence to the PFMA.
•Communicate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure optimal delivery across platforms.
•Build a network of national and international sources, including a wide range of professional institutions and researchers.
•Manage and successfully implement the SABC’s Performance Management System in accordance with the organisational policy and procedures.
•Manage employee relations to ensure conducive and productive working environment.

Qualifications and Experience


•Degree in journalism or any other relevant field of study.
•10 years of editorial experience in a news and current affairs environment, and 4 years must be at middle management level.
•Demonstrable knowledge of multimedia production systems and processes.
•Advanced understanding of the needs of the SABC’s News and Current Affairs audiences.
•Strong news sense and editorial judgement.
•Ability to make sound editorial decisions under pressure, and to identify, prioritise and interpret the most important stories of the day.
•A sound understanding of social, economic and political developments locally and globally.
•Strong ethical leadership, communication, and inter-personal skills.
•An understanding of, and proven ability to work in a multi-platform environment and in/with cross-functional teams, particularly digital news platforms.
•Appreciation and understanding of the diverse language mandate requirements.
•Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act.
•Advanced computer literacy.
